The 2017 race, which is sponsored by Appalachian Power and Dominion Power, begins with a 40-mile out-and-back bike ride, followed by a 12-mile down-river kayak paddle, and finishes with a 13.1-mile run on a rail-to-trail crushed surface. It takes place along southwestern Virginia’s New River Trail State Park. Participants may compete solo or in teams of two or three. The race attracts athletes of all fitness levels competing in various age groups and categories, from hardcore solo competitors to “bucket-listers” of all ages.
Baum's BBQ will be back with a tasty assortment of fare, and locally crafted brew will be available during and after the race for spectators and participants. Entrants will receive two well-deserved drink tickets for the beverage of their choice. Hot showers will be available to those camping Friday and on race day.
The three-stage race begins at Foster Falls with a 40-mile bike ride followed by a 12-mile kayak stage and then a half marathon (13.1 miles).

The race is limited to 300 entrants so register early to ensure a spot. Teams with at least two students or faculty members from the same university qualify for discount registration fees. Race sponsors take part in the Sponsor Challenge with top honors going to the team with the lowest overall time.
