Help with panic attacks

Q: I've gotten panic attacks since college, and the only thing that works for me is medication. I know that stress and caffeine can trigger attacks. Can relaxation help with panic attacks?

Sometimes humility pays off…

On Monday night, I went to the first practice for the Carrboro, NC Fall Ultimate Frisbee league. After a grueling scrimmage against Team 9, we retreated to the sidelines to chat and play some cooldown toss.  I was tossing with a guy I've played with before, but don't know particularly well (he had to remind me of his name before the practice), and Evie, our stalwart captain.

Eat Veggies, Save the Planet

Turns out eating a whole-foods, plant-based diet (i.e. Yummm!) isn't just good for us - it's also good for the embattled heavenly sphere we call home.

Now that global warming is an undisputable scientific fact (see Time magazine, April 3, 2006 if you're not already doing everything you can to reduce greenhouse gases), and the effects threaten to overwhelm our comfortable existence (tsunamis, hurricanes, threats to the food supply, killer poison ivy, instant ice age, etc.), the question is, what can we do about it? As individuals in our own lives, and as activists for our kids.

Until recently, the trendy way to show your concern was to buy a Prius or other hybrid electric car. And the statistics confirm this as a responsible choice, if you have a family of four or fewer, and your dog is smaller than a chinchilla.

And you can turn down the thermostat, opt for products that aren't overpackaged, and turn off TVs and computers and stereos when you aren't using them. Oh, and don't forget compact fluorescent lights.

But given the gravity of the situation, I wondered, what's the single biggest thing I could do for the planet I'm bequeathing to my children? Short of moving into the woods and wearing a loincloth? Keep Reading…

The Non-Controversy over Cow's Milk

We all learned in elementary school that milk is critical for strong bones and teeth.

Actually, cow's milk is significantly bad for us - especially the pasteurized, homogenized, hormone- and pesticide-loaded stuff that we get at the store.

I know a lot of people whose health improved dramatically after eliminated dairy products from their diets. And for the definitive (and very readable) research on milk and human health, check out The China Study by the eminent Cornell professor T. Colin Campbell.

I know that there seems to be a lot of controversy over whether milk is a health food or a fat-causing killer, but honestly, that's just because the dairy industry has so much marketing money to spend on bogus, bad and confusing studies. The actual science is much clearer than you'd guess.

Women's Health Initiative: A Really Bad Study

Have you heard the news? What you eat just doesn't matter!

The big health "news" of 2006 is that apparently, eating a low-fat diet doesn't protect women against breast cancer or heart disease. This study is touted as being "conclusive" - that is, a few fearless researchers with no hidden agenda have overturned a bunch of health "superstitions" by proving scientifically that - essentially - we're gonna get sick and fat no matter what, so we might as well stop trying to improve our diets.
