Alkalarian Diet?

Q: What do you think about the "Ph Miracle" diet and the connection between an overly acidic bloodstream and health ailments? Do you recommend supplements to maintain a healthy Ph balance?
A: I was interested in the
Alkalarian Diet about six years ago, and I came to the conclusion that
simply eating lots of fruits and vegetables, especially local and in
season, was pretty much going to do the trick for me. I haven't paid much attention to it since then.

I'm naturally suspicious of supplements, just on the grounds that
we've evolved to eat food and not pills, and I'm naturally distrustful
of an industry that creates things I can't evaluate and tries to patent
them. Too bad - I'd make a lot more money if I pushed pills on my
website.

Furthermore, the research on "wonder supplements" like Vitamin E
and Beta Carotene has shown that some compounds that are great for us
in their natural habitats (i.e. whole foods) just mess us up when we
extract and synthesize them in the lab.

But that's not to say that some supplements can't be helpful to some people sometimes. Just remember that the vast majority of beneficial substances in plants have never, in Joel Fuhrman's memorable words, "seen the inside of a bottle."
